24 Hours in New York to celebrate the new Dr. Huu

The part-time reddit and breadpig model, Dr. Huu, was awarded his PhD in Mechanical Engineering, though, which was nice. There are no photos to document the night of debauchery that ensued. Instead, here's a photo taken before brunch in Brooklyn the following day.

An afternoon with Christopher Hitchens and Johnny Walker

Erik, S.I., and I enjoyed a fine lunch of sandwiches and scotch with Christopher.  I was quite pleased with the reddit interview, which should be going on the hot new reddit YouTube channel the first week of December.  Stay tuned!

Stumbling upon writings in the sand: "SPREAD LO?"

Those missing letters could be a lot of things, really.  A command to "SPREAD LOLZ?"  Or an order to distribute "LOX," say, over a finely toasted bagel?

Perhaps the author had its heartbroken before he/she could finish... we'll never know.

New photos of the xkcd school we're building in Laos

“Do not train children to learning by force and harshness, but direct them to it by what amuses their minds, so that you may be better able to discover with accuracy the peculiar bent of the genius of each.” – Plato.

This school is a gift from the readers of XKCD, an internet comic strip. The world is full of exciting things to discover. We hope you find some of them.

This is the dedication going on the plaque at the school's entrance (as chosen by Randall with the help of xkcd readers).

See the rest of the photos and learn a bit more about the school on the breadpig company blog.

What Depression? Hearst wants a castle!

William Randolph Hearst wanted a castle, so he built one. It's astonishingly opulent, housing individual artwork that is today purportedly worth more than the castle's construction (it all belongs to the state of CA now, which cannot sell a single napkin without forfeiting the entire estate).  Just don't think about what he could've done for his fellow man with even some of that money during the Great Depression...

Seahorses at Monterey Bay Aquarium

Beautiful creatures. This leafy sea dragon pranced around like it new it was stunning. Also learned that sleeping sea horses look dead, but they're not! There's even some signage to assuage horrified children and adults alike.

Snacking on a hike is fun, but dangerous

Just what kind of preservatives are in these things?  I understand the whole "without compromise" slogan, but an expiration date that far in the future seems a bit much.

Hong Kong has tasty, exploding buns

Advertisements like this are quite compelling. I had no choice but to sit down for a hot milk tea and bun. The results were pleasant, but far less explosive. One of the managers was quite interested in my kindle, though, which made for a rousing discussion that ended with a resigned "well, some Chinese company will probably have a thinner, cheaper version in the next year, anyway."

Macau: You'll always be more than a "special administrative region of China" to me

Even if U.S. Customs took away the contraband (famous Macau beef & pork jerky) I was bringing back for team reddit, I still have fond memories of your charmingly derelict Portuguese relics juxtaposed with modern casinos and sin-dustry.  Oh, and that roulette-like game with the 3 dice instead of a wheel - I won HK$200 from that (don't bother doing the conversion to USD, it'll just look even less impressive).
